The Secret CDs website runs in conjunction with a monthly showcase evening on the first Wednesday of the month at The Voodoo Rooms, West Register Street, Edinburgh.

flier for 7 December 2011 Secret CDs evening

The forty-ninth monthly Secret CDs night is at The Voodoo Rooms Speakeasy on Wednesday 7th December. It's the last live gig we'll be promoting, for a while at least, and we thought we'd go out with a bang with four of the finest acts to have graced Secret CDs.

James Igoe says, “It's been four years almost to the day since Secret CDs launched in The Phoenix cellar bar and it's been a lot of fun doing these gigs.  It's time to move on and I think we're going out with a bang!  The four acts playing could easily have a career in the music industry given the right management, money and luck.  Adam Holmes absolutely packed the Voodoo Rooms bank in May and since then he's had some rave reviews - expect good things to happen in 2012.  Blueflint are one of the most established acts in the Edinburgh acoustic scene and packed The Bongo Club for their recent CD release.  Emily Scott coincidentally had her own packed CD release at Third Door the next day and her music is a thing of wonder.  The brilliant performer Katie Forbes is a force of nature, completely engaging and not to be missed.  Alongside the music we'll have some extra things going on as it's Christmas and the last do.  I'm sure it will be a positive night all round for those who love to hear quality music beautifully played.”

ADAM HOLMES AND THE EMBERS [http://soundcloud.com/adamholmesandtheembers] - Young Adam Holmes is beginning to get fantastic reviews from writers and bloggers as well as record company attention. A charismatic and talented songwriter - one to watch for 2012.

BLUEFLINT [www.blueflint.org.uk] - Probably Scotland’s top bluegrass outfit, Blueflint‘s music cuts across many more musical genres. Their latest, and possibly greatest, CD ‘Maudy Tree’ is among the most widely-acclaimed CDs from an unsigned Scottish band in 2011.

EMILY SCOTT [http://emilyscottmusic.com/] - Haunting, uplifting with more than a hint of melancholy Emily Scott‘s magical sound is akin to a female, much-improved Rufus Wainwright. The recently-released CD ‘I Write Letters I Never Send’ is a must-have and a big favourite of mine.

KATIE (ex- THE DULL FUDDS) [www.dullfudds.co.uk] - Heralding from the Borders, Katie is a natural entertainer guaranteed to engage your attention. Katie has a new band and a new sound which I for one am very keen to hear.

If you / your band...

  1. have made a CD
  2. are unsigned / on a small indie label
  3. operate in and around the Edinburgh area
  4. are interested in playing at the monthly showcase and selling your CD

... please let me know.  I'm open to all types of music, from all ages, gender, class, ethnicity, etc.  I will listen to your music and will give you as quick a response as I can.  Please contact Secret CDs using the Contact us page on this website.

For who is playing when go to the Secret CDs Facebook page which is regularly updated with gig news, videos, pictures, and general chat.

The forty-first monthly Secret CDs night is at The Voodoo Rooms Speakeasy on Wednesday 6th April. It promises to be an evening of very different musical styles with the top quality you expect from Secret CDs.

Winchester’s Polly and The Billets Doux are playing their first ever Edinburgh gig as part of a UK tour, Birdhead have just launched their first EP this month, Glasgow-based Sparrahawk is flying back to Edinburgh where he once built his nest and Portobello’s finest jazz-blues vocalist Rosie Nimmo plays with a very fine backing band.

These four great acts will play a live set and have their CDs on sale in the foyer:

BIRDHEAD [http://www.myspace.com/bir dhead-edinburgh]
Edinburgh duo Birdhead make big sounds with twelve talons and sound like, in their own words, “the most unlistenable cacophony of digital mayhem ever heard by no one.”
POLLY AND THE BILLETS DOUX [http://www.pollyandthebilletsdoux.co.uk/]
Championed by Bob Harris, Terry Wogan, Cerys Matthews and Tom Robinson, the band recently supported Fun Lovin' Criminals and the ‘Head of Steam’ EP, on their acclaimed debut album, reached number 17 on the Radio 1 Indie Chart.
SPARRAHAWK [http://www.myspace.com/aclspamborskee]
Swooping down through Sequences of Time and Space with a blend of Urban folk and Spoken word, Sparrahawk tell a story of a Life span we all know and can Empathize with.
ROSIE NIMMO [http://www.rosienimmo.com/]
Edinburgh singer/songwriter Rosie was raised on a mixed diet of classic folk, blues and rock. Rosie’s acclaimed album ‘Lazy and Mellow’ was produced by Hobotalk’s Marc Pilley.
